We are so excited to share Megan and Andrew’s wedding day.  Though we have not known these two for very long we feel like old friends.  I think it is not uncommon for photographers to feel a special bond with their wedding clients but sometimes things just click too and it can happen immediately.

I have always wanted to photograph a courthouse ceremony.  I know that probably sounds weird but when Megan first contacted us and she said they were getting married at the Albany County Courthouse, we were IN!!  There were a few too many people for chambers so Justice Michael Lynch and his assistant Karen lined up use of a beautiful courtroom.  They even tidied it up beforehand, a testament to how awesome they are…. Because they are.

The weather was not super cooperative on this day.  It was crazy humid, there were tornado warnings (which somehow, despite the constant use of weather apps, we managed to keep from Megan), torrential downpours, some wind, and limited use of umbrellas, but nobody cared.  Well, maybe some people cared, but it didn’t matter because everyone else was taking it in stride.  We managed to get some fun portraits in between the rain and there were just enough breaks otherwise to get people out from under cover for the toasts.   It was easy to maintain a relaxed and happy vibe, with lush garden are at the Olde English Pub as the amazing backdrop, despite the challenging weather.

Such a great group of family and friends surrounding Megan and Andrew celebrating their love for each other, love of beer, good food, and doughnuts, left us on a high, and not just from the sugar either.  Megan and Andrew, we wish you a lifetime of happiness and countless food and fine beverage explorations.

Picked my son up from school one day and, as a surprise, went to see the only B-29 currently flying (another is being returned to flying condition), during its visit to the airport in June.  As his grandfathers are veterans and one, my step-father, was a navigator in a B-17 during World War II, he’s very interested and was excited to go.  He wasn’t so excited about my taking the time to take so many pictures.

We went to see a B-17 that flew in a couple of years ago too, and this gave him the opportunity to see the navigator’s position in the nose of the plane where his grandfather was stationed when flying.  I think doing these things is important to provide him an understanding about what his grandfather and other veterans faced, the sacrifices they made and an appreciation for their service.

https://lynneandjimphotography.zenfolio.com/blog/2015/8/the-fair-2015 The Fair, 2015

When I was a kid I spent a good bit of time at the Fair.  For the past few years our kids have had a 4H commitment of one sort or another which required them to put in their time as well which, in turn, provides the opportunity for a day of quality family time on the midway.  Like most any event, time spent at the Fair provides an opportunity to photograph things which I think make for an interesting image, but it also allows me to photograph Lynne and the kids when distracted while having fun on rides and playing carnival games and without them being too aware of the camera.

As a couple and as partners, Lynne and I have different strengths which have proven to complement the other's strengths as we face life’s challenges together.  It’s been much the same working together as photographers.  While Lynne typically takes the lead during portrait sessions, is much more adept at posing people and putting them at ease in front of the camera, and in putting together detail shots which are an important part of documenting an event like a wedding, I much prefer taking photographs of people and things as I find them.  Many of the images I like most then are those where the subject is unaware of the camera, which is decidedly not the case when taking a portrait, and rarely the case with my son, who is acutely aware of the camera, typically doesn’t care to have his picture taken and isn’t shy about telling me so.  Hence the blog post about this year’s visit to the Fair as context for some of the images below.

Thanks as always.

May 23, 2015

Wedding families are special to us.  I suppose someday, this feeling of closeness may not be so significant but I hope not.  There is something about going through the planning process and being able to share such a special time with a couple and their families that makes us all warm and fuzzy.  When we leave, we feel like friends, we hug and hope that this will not be the last.

It was no different with Erica and Tyler and their wonderful family and friends.  This was a beautiful day, and everything went off without a hitch.  Erica had planned every detail with so many personal touches (there was definitely a theme) like a Disney movie quote on each of the table number markers.  We put together a little slideshow of some of the images from the day.  We have so many we want to share!

Venue: Mohawk River Country Club

Officiant: Ed Litvaitis of We Marry U

I might always remember December 18, 2014.  This was the day while at work, at SUNY Albany, we were all trying to focus on our work and stay on top of the news about a child abduction that had occurred in Knox.  This was just a few miles (OK, Country miles, but still) from where I live, and near Thatcher Park where Jim and I frequent with our family and have many photo sessions. This was the day I hurried to my hair appointment and sat next to a school district employee, from a neighboring district, and listened to her complain about not being able to get out of her building because they were in lock-down.  She couldn’t understand why this affected her because the missing child did not attend her school.

A few hours later we learned the sad story of Kenneth White.   Our kids knew about the Amber Alert, and they saw that little boy’s face on the news.  They were scared to think that someone had gone into someone’s home and stolen a little boy.  We now had to tell them that as horrible as that was, the real story seemed to point instead to that little boy’s own family.  He was not safe with his family and he was not missing, but instead had been taken violently, and unfairly, from this world by a member of his family.

This story so affected us.  It may have been due to the proximity to our home and the holidays, but there was something about having to go through a local amber alert, with the worst possible outcome, and having to walk through the whole thing with our kids.  Trying to find the words to help them understand something we didn’t, and still don’t, ourselves understand.  We had to do something…. something to heal our hearts.

We put out a plea for nominations for a free photo session with us.  We wanted to give this to someone who could not or would not do this for themselves.  We were contacted by some wonderful people who wanted to gift this session to their friends and families.  All were deserving, but it was one of the messages we received from someone we had never met, not even a follower of ours, that changed everything.  This is where our hearts started to heal.

Meet the Shermans:

Bob and Candice met when she was 17 and he was 22, while working in the same restaurant.  Just kids themselves, they loved each other, built a life together, got married and had babies: 3 of them.  Life was busy.

In 2009, when their children were approximately 8, 6, and 5 years old, Bob and Candice opened their home to a relative’s four children, making them a family of NINE.  Seven children between the ages of 1 and 8 and Bob and Candice.  One year later, Candice found she was pregnant, and they are now a family of TEN.   When I asked Candice if they planned to have a large family, she said, “We weren’t against having a large family but we didn’t plan to have such a large family either- it is clear that God did.”  It isn’t until 2013 that the adoption process was finalized, making them a legal family.

Bob leaves his inflexible job to stay home and care for their bounty of children while Candice maintains her employment outside the home.  Having a family this size requires flexibility, sacrifice, creativity and the ability to accept support.  Candice credits the support of good friends, family and their church with their success.

In the months leading up to our meeting, I constantly ask myself how they do it.  I can barely get through my life with 2 kids and a couple of dogs let alone a family of this size.  I mean are there enough sick days to get through one round of the stomach bug, let alone doctor appointments, the orthodontist, eye care, and holy cow, have you seen the price of milk?!

Oh, and did I mention that the Shermans also foster?  Yes, there is a foster child living in their home.  As luck would have it, with eight kids of their own, their hearts have enough love for one more.

Jim and I brought an assistant with us the day of the shoot.  Michelle is awesome, great with kids, and has a super comfortable vibe.  We were hoping she would be enough, foreseeing this large group, kids running everywhere who surely were going to get bored.  [Umm, no, that would have been our kids, if they were there.]  Instead, these kids were polite, friendly, silly, quick to laugh, well behaved, respectful of us and each other.  They were heaven.  Bob and Candice are lovely, sweet with each other, laughing and smiling.  The whole thing was CAKE and the kids…. adorable.

So, our hearts, they feel a lot better.  In this couple of hours on the morning of May 2, we started to feel better.  Our session took place at Thatcher Park, just down the street from where this whole thing started, and just one day shy of the two year anniversary of the finalization of that adoption that doubled the size of their family.  In the end, while we set out to do something for someone else, we find ourselves unable to repay this special family for what they have done for us.

Finally, if you are considering opening your home to children in need, do it.  If you know someone who already does, help them.  Open your ears and be a friend, arrange a picnic, donate back to school supplies.  Candice said some beautiful words….

“At the end of the day the truth is it is hard work to blend a family like this, sometimes it really takes walking in each other shoes and making the effort to understand. Some days it takes patience that can only come directly from God. Its making choices to love each other through the good and the bad days and realizing how blessed we are to be part of something bigger than ourselves.”

Love,

Lynne and Jim

Numerous photographers and instructors encourage new photographers to invest their time and resources into learning and doing instead of buying cameras and gear.  Since buying our first DSLR after capsizing a kayak (story for a different day), we've bought our share of gear, but it was Lynne's signing us up for a one day photography crash course at The Arts Center of the Capital Region instructed by Katherine Wright of YTK Photography (http://ytkphotography.com/) which started us down this road.  Lynne and I had taken photos in the past, long before digital, but with Katy Wright's able instruction and encouragement of her students to do more and step outside their comfort zone we were willing to take the first steps toward making photography more than a hobby.  We would highly recommend that anyone interested in learning more about photography and taking their DSLR out of Auto take any of Katy Wright's courses at the Arts Center.  (It just might help you make some money to pay for some gear....)

As the pic shows, the Arts Center has plenty to offer other than photography too.  Check out: http://www.artscenteronline.org/.
